If you paid close enough attention while playing through Breath of the Wild and the first DLC, you may have noticed the Master Sword occasionally speaking to Zelda or Link. Various in-game clues, such as the music and sound effects surrounding these occasions, point to the return of Fi, who we last met right before she entered an “endless sleep” at the end of Skyward Sword. In an interesting YouTube video, user HMK explores how and why Fi has returned.

At the end of Skyward Sword, Fi states that she must rest in “a sleep without end.” However, in a locked memory and at the completion of the Master Trials DLC, the Master Sword communicates with Zelda and Link, respectively. HMK theorizes that awakening the true power of the Master Sword also awakened Fi, who now may appear in future Zelda titles. This leads HMK to wonder – why has Fi awakened now?

HMK argues that Calamity Ganon is in fact the last remnant of Demise, which escaped from its imprisonment in the Master Sword. This argument is based on the idea that the Master Sword’s full potential was originally designed to combat Demise, and we only see this full potential in Breath of the Wild when we are around Calamity Ganon or its malice. Since Demise has now escaped the Master Sword, the full power of the Master Sword is needed to combat him. Additionally, since the Master Sword is no longer containing Demise, its full power can be unleashed again. This also allowed for Fi to awaken from her sleep and make her return.

So there you have it. Could Fi’s return have been caused by the return of Demise? And do you think she’ll pop up in future Zelda games or Breath of the Wild DLC? Check out the video below or click here to view it on Youtube, then leave your thoughts in the comments below!
