I can still recall how excited I was to get Ocarina of Time back in 1998. Zelda had already shown it could be a great game and franchise, but so far that had only been shown in 2D. After seeing what Mario 64 could do with 3D, I knew there was great potential. After what felt like an eternity, the game finally came out. I bought it immediately and inserted it into my Nintendo 64 as soon as I got home. I went through the title screen and opening cut scene, and then BAM, I’m thrown into this beautiful area called Kokiri Forest.

At that time, the experience was really indescribable. There was luscious green vegetation, small ponds and streams, and these cool looking houses that appeared to be tree stumps. I can remember running around the first hour or so just exploring, not really caring about the task that was at hand. Eventually, I made my way out of Kokiri Forest and into Hyrule Field. After this, you really don’t go back and visit Kokiri Forest much. You do go back to the area for your first adult dungeon, but that mostly takes place in the Lost Woods.

In the Zelda franchise, we have encountered many areas multiple times, but sadly, Kokiri Forest is not one of them. I’ve always wanted to go back and visit this place in another game. It still holds a special place in my heart because it was the first Zelda area I experienced in 3D. Why did we never find this area in another game. What happened to Kokiri Forest? Well, Youtuber Dr.Wily explores this in his newest Zelda video.

He takes a look at the three timelines and theorizes what happened to Kokiri Forest in each timeline. He specifically focuses on Link to the Past, Twilight Princess, and Wind Waker. Each of these games appears on a different split of the timeline. What do you think about his theory? Do you agree with all of it? Do you think some things are possible and others aren’t? Let us know in the comments below.
